Designed in 1856 by Dr. Jean Alexandre LeMat, a French immigrant of the United States, the LeMat revolver, known as the “grape shot revolver”, was a unique, 9 shot .42 or .36 caliber revolver, with an additional 2nd barrel, which fired a 20 gauge or 28 gauge shotgun shell. The production of the LeMat revolver was backed by CSA General, P. G. T. Beauregard, who was the cousin of LeMat’s spouse. Approximately 2,900 of these revolvers were made, and distributed to the Confederate States Army, as well as the Navy. Many variants of this revolver were made, in varying sizes, firing mechanisms and configurations, with rare versions such as the carbine version (a variant with an extended barrel and shoulder stock) and the “baby LeMat", which was a much smaller version, with production numbers of around only 100.
