Designed by Samuel Colt, the Colt Model 1860 Army was the most widely used revolver during the American civil war. Using the same size frame as the earlier, Model 1851 Navy revolver, the 1861 model had a longer, modified cylinder, allowing it to be chambered in .44 Cal. More than 200,000 of these revolvers were manufactured from 1860 to 1873. Being a black powder or “cap and ball” revolver, military ammunition often combined a bullet and a measured charge of powder, in a coated paper cartridge, making reloads in the field easier. Few variations of this revolver exist, though the military models were built with elongated screw lugs on the side of the frames, allowing the attachment of a shoulder stock.
